Inaugural EPEC-India workshop held in Chennai, India in August 2007

The first ever EPEC–India workshop on palliative and end-of-life care took place August 16-18, 2007 and was graciously hosted by Sri Ramachandra University in Chennai, India. EPEC-India is based on the EPEC and EPEC-Oncology curricula with extensive region-specific adaptations and several new modules. The curriculum consists of 26 modules and 4 plenaries. This project has received strong support from institutions in India and around the world. With support from the Lance Armstrong Foundation, Drs. Linda Emanuel, M. R. Rajagopal and Vivek Khemka along with a team of experts from India and the USA worked on developing this curriculum. The modules cover such topics as “Whole Patient Assessment,” “Requests for Dying,” and “Advancing Palliative Care in India,” in addition to several others. Dr. Ram Rajagopalan of the Indian Society of Critical Care Medicine wrote a new plenary on legal issues in palliative and end-of-life care in India. HIV expert Dr. Vijaybhaskar Reddy Kandula wrote a module on HIV in India. Pediatrics, geriatrics and emergency medicine were also incorporated into the curriculum. A whole new set of trigger videos were created for EPEC-India. All of the materials were very well received by the audience. We are thankful to all the contributors to EPEC-India, the EPEC and the EPEC-Oncology curricula. The president of the Indian Association of Palliative Care Dr. Sukdev Nayak and other members participated in the workshop both as attendees and as faculty.
